In 1977, the Marian Goodman gallery opened in an Upper East Side townhouse, choosing the Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers for its inaugural show. Since then, it’s had the distinction of being a “big small” gallery. Artists who reject the idea of going blue chip have opted for Marian Goodman—think Nairy Baghramian, Steve McQueen, Julie Mehretu, and many more. Gallery management has passed from Goodman to her successors, and now the legendary institution is taking over an entire building in Tribeca. To celebrate, this inaugural show will include work by 50 artists, including Bernard Frize, Giovanni Anselmo, Leonor Antunes, and Giuseppe Penone. Many, in true Goodman fashion, are European conceptualists. —Elena Clavarino
