The British-Nigerian artist Yinka Ilori is no elitist. Rather, his work is playful, humorous, and color-drenched. As the child of illegal immigrants, Ilori faced an uncertain upbringing. And yet his family’s commitment to unwavering joy was not only an act of resistance, it’s an emotion he expresses throughout his multi-disciplinary practice. For Ilori’s first solo gallery exhibition in London, joy is the main theme in a meditation on the West African disapora and its cultural heritage. Floral motifs pair with lace patterns, an ode to one of his mother’s favorite materials. Set in the city of his birth, the exhibition is a “homecoming” for Ilori. —Maggie Turner
