Born and raised in Kampala, Uganda; now living in Brooklyn, New York; Leilah Babirye takes what the city discards—bicycle chains and gears, rubber inner tubes, nails, bolts and found metal—and assembles the refuse into striking sculptural figures. She left Uganda after being outed as gay in 2015, and her practice portrays queer lives with dignity and force. “I want to help people feel a sense of belonging,” she told Art Basel in 2024. For the ICA Boston, Babirye has built an entire queer wedding in ceramic—bride, groom, ring bearer, flower girl, bridesmaid, groomsman. A circle of large-scale charred-wood elders and ancestors looks on. —Elena Clavarino
