The American collector Jack Shear is a curator, an accomplished photographer, and the director of the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation. (Kelly was Shear’s husband, and the two were together for 32 years.) Shear’s passion for collecting started in 1925, in San Francisco, when as a young boy he came across a Japanese woodblock print. He insisted the store manager keep it aside, vowing to find enough money to purchase it—which he did. (Its value increased sixfold.) Today, Shear’s collection of nearly 700 drawings includes works by Degas, de Kooning, Picasso, Giorgio Morandi, Alice Neel. This exhibition sees drawings from the last five centuries displayed in Shear’s unique style: moving in linear fashion around the room, close set, frames often touching, and arranged to suggest affinities rather than chronology or provenance. —E.C.
