To America

Oct 22–24, 2020
The Green-Wood Cemetery, 500 25th St, Brooklyn, NY 11232, United States

Imagine a performance that recommends a flashlight and sensible shoes because it takes place in a cemetery after dark. Andrew Ousley, whose Death of Classical is known for its inventive programming, presents concert experiences you won’t get anywhere else. This one, “To America,” combines music, history, literature, moonlight, and dance—not to mention the night sounds of late October—to address the question of what America was, is, and should be. As Ousley writes, “The grounds of Green-Wood and the stories of the people buried there represent this nation in all of its endless complexity.” The music of Carlos Simon, H. Leslie Adams, Caroline Shaw, Leonard Bernstein, George Walker, and others are on a program curated by Ousley and Harry Weil, with artistic partner Liz Player and The Harlem Chamber Players. Tickets gain access to a 150-minute performance in a distanced group of 30 people, departing every half hour. —L.J.
