“If the depths of our mind contain within it strange forces capable of augmenting those on the surface,” wrote André Breton in his 1924 Surrealist manifesto, a rally to artists everywhere, “or of waging a victorious battle against them, there is every reason to seize them.” And seize them they did, by creating landscapes of the subconscious, extraterrestrial shapes, and barren worlds with strange creatures. To celebrate the movement’s 100th anniversary, several important works from the first half of the 20th century, including Yves Tanguy’s Mars Azure, along with contemporary works, are going on view in Saint-Moritz. It makes for a great stop in town after the slopes. —Elena Clavarino
