The Studio

Seth Rogen in The Studio.

We got to know Seth Rogen through screwball, lowbrow roles in films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) and Pineapple Express (2008); it seemed playing knuckleheads with penchants for pot was his sweet spot. A change came in 2015, when Rogen delivered an excellent performance as Steve Wozniak in Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs. Since then, he’s directed films, acted in serious parts, and now, with The Studio, evolved once more. Rogen created this smart satire and also stars in it, playing a pretentious cinephile who’s been appointed head of a movie studio. He hopes to make highbrow films that endear him to actors and directors. But he must also appease corporate executives who are in the movie business solely for profit. With the help of cameos from about half of the Oscars V.I.P. list (Martin Scorsese, Charlize Theron, Steve Buscemi), Rogen takes aim at Hollywood and hits his mark. —Jack Sullivan
