It’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by the sheer speed in which artificial intelligence has infiltrated our lives. Some cheer this development in the name of technological advancement. Others, known as “doomers,” are more pessimistic; for them, A.I. presages the end of humanity. Amid such polarization, the director Daniel Roher (Navalny) volunteers to take a step back and ask, “What is AI?” A new documentary tracks his journey for answers, as explained through stop-motion animation. Consultants on the subject include Sam Altman, C.E.O. of OpenAI, and Dan Hendrycks, director of the Center for AI Safety. Roher warns against any harsh judgement for or against the technology. “Don’t listen to people who make bold proclamations,” he told IndieWire. “People don’t know what the future is, and we have agency over our own lives and how we use this technology.” —Maggie Turner
