In 2019, Andrea Stanley published the article “Is It Possible to Stop a Mass Shooting Before It Happens?” That story inspired this eight-part thriller in which Jessica Chastain plays the savant of the title: Jodi Goodwin, an investigator who infiltrates online hate groups to prevent acts of violence. She discovers that these communities aren’t just faceless trolls but include doctors, policemen, and even that American ideal “the girl next door.” It all feels especially urgent given the increasingly rageful emotions at large in America.
