Gentle Monster

Léa Seydoux in Gentle Monster.

Streaming on Theaters

At first, Léa Seydoux was hesitant about starring in the film Gentle Monster. “I was afraid of the subject, to be honest,” she said in an interview with The Independent. Sober and emotional, directed by Maria Kreutzer, the movie is about a renowned pianist (Seydoux) whose life is upended when police raid her home and arrest her husband (Laurence Rupp) for possession of child pornography. Instead of lingering on the crime itself, the film focuses on Weiss’s reckoning with her new reality: the man she married is a monster. “I think that it has to be talked about,” Seydoux continued. “And maybe because of this film, people can open up. If people can feel less alone with this, then it’s a good thing.” Having screened at the Cannes Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, Gentle Monster now heads to Netflix and theaters. —Maggie Turner
