Thank You Very Much

Andy Kaufman

There has never been a performer quite like Andy Kaufman. The entertainer, who was most widely known for playing Latka on the sitcom Taxi (1978–1983), used gigs on Saturday Night Live to intentionally bomb before the crowd. He would show up at untelevised events as an alter-ego named Tony Clifton (an abrasive, drunken lounge singer), apparently for his own amusement. He claimed on talk shows that he was the “intergender wrestling champion of the world,” and would offer $1,000 to any woman who could pin him. These odd antics seemed to be a joke that only Kaufman was in on—perhaps that’s why, in retrospect, they’re so funny. Alex Braverman’s documentary explores the life and career of the singular comic through interviews with Danny DeVito and Steve Martin, among others. The film concludes with Kaufman’s death, in 1984. Rumors persist that even his expiration was a ruse. —Jack Sullivan

Thank You Very Much is also playing in select theaters, and on Apple TV+.
