M.I.A.

Shannon Gisela as Etta Tiger Jones in M.I.A.

The producer Bill Dubuque chooses the murkiest, most unpleasant settings for his shows, which makes sense considering he’s exploring society’s grimy underbelly. We saw this in the hit show Ozark, and he’s done it once more with M.I.A. This time around, Dubuque isn’t straying far from the chaos of the cartel world. The show centers around Etta Tiger Jones (Shannon Gisela), who flees the Florida Keys for neon-lit Miami after the murder of her family, who ran a drug-running business. She decides to dismantle the responsible cartel, and isn’t afraid to kill. Unapologetically an antihero, Etta embodies the show’s moral ambiguity. “I think it’s rarer to have female characters be so dynamic,” Gisela has said. Cary Elwes plays a private investigator tracking the entire case. All episodes drop on May 7, ready for binge-watching. —Maggie Turner
