Lee Raybon’s wife left him. His relationship with his daughter is on the rocks. He’s also not the best at maintaining a steady income, never mind regular child support. But one thing is constant: his pursuit of the truth. Raybon is played by Ethan Hawke and he’s the character we follow in The Lowdown, a new eight-part series from the Native American director Sterlin Harjo. In 2023, Hawke made a surprise appearance in Harjo’s Reservation Dogs; here he’s a journalist in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who stops at nothing to expose the city’s violent underbelly—from affairs and oil deals to murders and white supremacist crimes. But at what cost? “He’s predictably terrific in the role,” writes the critic Radheyan Simonpillai in The Guardian, “playing Lee as a rascal who we simultaneously root for and are embarrassed by.” —Jeanne Malle
