Squeezed between aging parents and kids who can’t afford to move out, Generation X is finding itself uniquely stressed. Sharon Horgan, of Bad Sisters and Catastrophe, has made a show about it. In HBO’s new comedy series, Youth, she plays Alex, a 50-year-old literary agent and divorcée navigating the dating world while caring for her parents as well as a son who has yet to fully embrace adulthood. The series is about sex, love, and parenting in middle age, and the warped expectations we bring to all three. “[Alex] wants to have this valuable, creative, couldn’t-give-a-fuck kind of life, but she’s not there yet,” Horgan tells Vanity Fair. The eight-episode season premieres on September 20 with two episodes, then runs Sundays through the November 1 finale. Rupert Friend, Sharlene Whyte, Aran Murphy, and Robbie Gee round out the cast. —Clara Scholl
