Netflix is bringing its landmark adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude to a close with an ambitious second installment of the epic family saga, beginning on August 5. Filmed entirely in Colombia, Part Two consists of seven episodes that chronicle the final 50 years of the Buendía family’s story, a time when the mythical Macondo transformed from a utopia into a town consumed by progress, violence, and the fulfillment of a long-foretold curse. Instead of ending with a traditional season finale, the story concludes with a nearly two-hour Grand Finale, which director Laura Mora says was the only way to match the scale of the novel. “Each episode of this second part is like a film,” she told Netflix. “After living in that house and in that town for three years, we felt that closing this journey had to feel just as grand, epic and cinematic.” —Clara Scholl
