“Thank God,” the British artist Heather Phillipson wrote in 2020, “art is one environment where it’s OK to be a weirdo.” Her Tate Britain Commission, titled Rupture No 1: Blowtorching the Bitten Peach, fills the museum’s grand central galleries with a parallel universe that is indeed weird. Phillipson combines salvaged machines, papier-mâché sculpture, and other paraphernalia to create alien creatures, which are bathed in red light. She describes her installation as a sequence of “charged ecosystems, maladaptive seasons and unearthed lifeforms.” Though the idea, Phillipson says, is to “generate ecstatic experience,” the atmosphere is meant to threaten. Because the future is uncertain. —E.C.
