Serge Roche was born in 1898, the son of an art dealer and collector whose shop was frequented by Picasso and Renoir. Roche, too, grew up to be a dealer and collector, but he was also a designer who smoothed Baroque motifs into a sleek Moderne style, and specialized in stucco and mirrored surfaces. Curated by Charlap Hymen and Herrero, “Glass Subjects” pays tribute to Roche and his legacy, focusing especially on his 1930s gallery of mirrors in Paris and his fixation on reflective objects. Roche’s obsession with reflection had psychological implications. To reflect is to look inward, and to look in a mirror is to look into oneself. With more than 20 works from over 300 years, this exhibition encourages us to do just that. —Henry McGrath
