Businessmen, philanthropists, and art collectors, the brothers Leonard and Ronald Lauder were the sole heirs of their mother’s cosmetics empire—Estée Lauder. She hailed from Hungary, not far from where Egon Schiele painted his first Expressionist masterpieces. Leonard died last June, at age 92, and now 24 lots from his once-in-a-generation collection are hitting the block at Sotheby’s to inaugurate its new headquarters at the Breuer building. In addition to the Lauder sale, there’s “The Now & Contemporary Evening Auction,” featuring works by Cecily Brown, Henry Taylor, and Raymond Pettibon, not to mention that infamous piece by Maurizio Cattelan—the 18K gold toilet. —Elena Clavarino
