Project 1: Sarah Lucas

Aug 7, 2021 – Feb 13, 2022
Parkes Pl E, Parkes ACT 2600, Australia

The English artist Sarah Lucas has long used questionable materials in her art. Critics and viewers alike frowned at the cigarettes, stockings, and vegetables in her multimedia works. In the 1990s, they scoffed at Au Naturel, a mattress embedded with fruits and vegetables symbolizing female and male sex organs. “I think art should be amateur,” Lucas has famously stated. “It should be done for love.” Nevertheless, her satirical tweaks of the art establishment have brought international acclaim, placing her alongside British contemporaries Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst. In 2015, Lucas represented Britain in the Venice Biennale with the phallic installation I SCREAM DADDIO. This exhibition presents recent bodies of work by Lucas, including two new pieces from the “Bunny” series, which hails back to the 90s. —E.C.
