“Peck: Miami in Motion” is a perfect opener for Gonzalo García, even if Miami City Ballet’s brand new artistic director didn’t come up with it. In his 15-year tenure at the New York City Ballet, the Spaniard was a Justin Peck regular, originating several roles. Peck’s work is best known for its impeccable and mesmerizing architectural invention—keyed to propulsive and infectious modernist and pop music—its friendly Gen-Z spirit, and its pep. But the N.Y.C.B. resident choreographer has also exhibited a melancholy streak, and, typical of the House of Balanchine, it’s the danseurs who carry it. Besides comic ebullience, García specialized in inward, dreamer roles in ballets by Balanchine, Robbins, and Ratmansky as well as by Peck. It will be interesting to see how his own propensities shape repertory choices—and the dancers—in the coming years. In the meantime, “Peck: Miami in Motion” includes two M.C.B. originals—the abundantly inventive 2015 Heatscape, featuring a sizzling Shepherd Fairey backdrop; the melancholy 2013 duet Chutes and Ladders; and the astounding breakout hit, 2012’s Year of the Rabbit, to Sufjan Stevens’ wordless astrological album, nimbly orchestrated. —Apollinaire Scherr
