Are You Now or Have You Ever Been

Until Sept 11
131 W 55th St, New York, NY 10019, USA

What would you risk for your beliefs? Are You Now or Have You Ever Been thrusts audiences into the tense world of the 1940s anti-communist hearings, courtroom spectacles that forced some of America’s most celebrated artists to choose between their principles and their careers—not to mention the possibility of prison. Drawn entirely from the actual transcripts of House Un-American Activities Committee hearings, Eric Bentley’s play recreates the interrogations and testimonies that fueled the Hollywood blacklist. Artists such as Arthur Miller, Jerome Robbins, Paul Robeson, Elia Kazan, Lillian Hellman, Abe Burrows, and Lionel Stander are brought to life by a rotating all-star cast featuring Bob Odenkirk, Molly Ringwald, Michael McKean, David Krumholtz, Andrew McCarthy (fitting last name!), and more. Running for 15 weeks, the show re-creates a chilling chapter of American witch-hunting and censorship that still resonates today. Just ask Stephen Colbert. —Carolina de Armas
