“I am interested in Women with a capital W,” the photographer Maryam Eisler has said. She’s are also interested in visual history: her images are full of caressing references to the works of George Hoyningen-Huene and Georgia O’Keeffe, Imogen Cunningham and Robert Mapplethorpe. Iranian born, educated in America, and London based, Eisler contributes photography to the glossies Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, and Vogue Arabia. The photographs in this series were taken in London at Leighton House, the Victorian home of the Orientalist Lord Leighton, and cloak their female subjects in color, pattern, and decorative ornament—not to mention mystery. —L.J.
