Celebratory. Expressive. Critical. These three words describe the work of artist Joy Gregory, who is now 65. The exhibition “Catching Flies with Honey” was inspired by one of her mother’s favorite proverbs: “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” In over 250 pieces in the mediums of photography, film, textiles, and haunting Victorian cyanotypes, she explores the issues of the day as well as society’s perception of beauty. Earlier in Gregory’s career, she recently told The Guardian, her art wasn’t considered “Black enough,” meaning it wasn’t fitting into the expected framework of Black visual art. “The whole point of me being able to do my practice was having the choice to do what I wanted,” she says, “not what someone else dictated I’d be allowed to do.” It appears that the world has finally caught up Gregory. —Alexandra Lemer
