What do Utopian Robots and an 18th-century set of Buffon’s Les Histoires Naturelles have in common? Both have influenced the designs of Andrew Gn. Born in 1966 in Singapore, the son of Chinese and Japanese parents, Gn brings his cross-cultural background into the fashions he produces in Paris, where he opened his atelier in 1995. “He expresses himself from a place of understanding,” says Jackie Yoong, curator of this exhibition at the Peabody Essex, “there’s no need to associate ‘home’ with a single location.” Gn has produced over 80 collections and 10,000 ensembles; he’s dressed Princess Catherine of Wales, Queen Rania of Jordan, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé. “Andrew Gn: Fashioning the World” celebrates his bold designs, detail-oriented craftsmanship, and dazzling synthesis of East and West. —Alexandra Lemer
