South Korean Hollywood—Hallyuwood—is particularly adept at combining the genres of black comedy and thriller (see Parasite or Squid Game.) And No Other Choice, directed by Park Chan-wook and based on The Ax by Donald Westlake, is no exception. The second film adaptation of that novel—the first was Costa-Gavras’s 2005 French-language feature The Axe—No Other Choice follows a desperate paper-industry expert (Lee Byung-hun of Squid Game fame) who decides to kill off his competitor. Already nominated for three Golden Globes, the movie was also selected as the South Korean entry for the Oscar category of Best International Feature Film. —Carolina de Armas
