Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, and spent the next 36 years becoming the most photographed woman in the world—a process she understood, controlled, and was ultimately consumed by. Marking the centenary of her birth, this exhibition assembles the work of more than 20 photographers—among them, Cecil Beaton, Eve Arnold, Richard Avedon, Philippe Halsman, and Milton Greene—as well as paintings and prints by Andy Warhol, Pauline Boty, and Marlene Dumas. It begins with Monroe’s earliest pinups and ends with the photography session that was her last—shot by Allan Grant at her Brentwood home the day before she died. Of the 432 images taken that afternoon, only eight were published at the time. —Elena Clavarino
