Marcel Duchamp was a chess aficionado known for his intellectual rigor at the table, a conceptual prowess he also brought to his art. Duchamp happens to be an idol for the young Canadian artist Marcel Dzama, who for over a decade has been obsessed with chess. In 2011, Dzama created a video titled A Game of Chess—it shows large pawns dueling for victory in Guadalajara, Mexico. Dzama works across a variety of media, but is most famous for his intricate dioramas, which often depict fantasy worlds of harmony and light. In this exhibition, paintings on canvas and paper see figures drifting amid golden stars and shimmering moons. Large-scale sculptures of Dzama’s stylized chess pieces round out the show. —Elena Clavarino
