Louise Bourgeois: The Heart Has Its Reasons

Dec 19, 2020 – Feb 3, 2021
Oeystrasse 29, 3792 Gstaad, Switzerland

The French mathematician Blaise Pascal once said, “The heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing.” It is little known that Louise Bourgeois, before her mother’s death in 1932, studied mathematics and philosophy. When she turned to art making, that learning came too. Bourgeois created works that investigate transcendent and eternal themes: death and the subconscious, love and ego. Her mother looms large. In this exhibition, landmark sculptures such as Couple, Untiled 7, and Brother & Sister are among the works on display. —E.C.
