A self-taught multi-media artist from Jamaica, Queens, Jordan Watson draws from the Afro-futurism movement to create images of Black excellence. His vibrant, large-scale oil paintings have Black individuals participating in recreational activities from which they’ve historically been excluded, such as race-car driving, horseback riding, and tennis. In a nod to R+V’s St. Moritz location, Watson’s latest exhibition sees Black men and women skiing across alpine glades and ice skating on frozen ponds. “‘Easier to Breath’ represents the exhale,” Watson explains. “The moment of relief and clarity that comes after breaking barriers or achieving new heights.” —Paulina Prosnitz
