Set in Edinburgh, this crime-thriller based on the Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen’s book series follows an abrasive English detective charged with running the precinct’s new cold-case unit. Scarred and traumatized by a recent shooting in which he was badly wounded and his partner was paralyzed, Carl Morck (played by Matthew Goode) assembles a ragtag team that includes a Syrian ex-police officer, Akram Salim (the scene-stealing Alexej Manvelov), whose mordant catchphrase is “I am Akram.” They take up a stack of unsolved crimes, focusing on the disappearance of a female prosecuting attorney, still missing after four years. Written and directed by the Queens Gambit creator Scott Frank, Dept. Q is the perfect fix for fans of Slow Horses, Killing Eve, and The Americans. —Paulina Prosnitz
