Beef—Season Two

Charles Melton, Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, and Cailee Spaeny in the second season of Beef.

In the opening scene of Beef, a desolate-looking Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) is at a home improvement store, trying to decide whether he should return some earlier purchases. In the parking lot, he swerves his ramshackle truck toward a fancy white car, which belongs to the prim and successful Amy Lau (Ali Wong). She gives him the finger and he chases her in a fit of road rage. The showdown culminates with Amy almost crashing into Danny’s car. What ensues is a long and ridiculous feud—a “beef.” One of the best things on Netflix today, the first season of Lee Sung Jin’s fast-paced dark comedy is as funny as it is awkward. A new season brings an entirely new cast and storyline, led by Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan. They play a married couple whose very public argument at a country club is witnessed by two younger employees (Cailee Spaeny and Charles Melton). This sets off a game of favors and coercion that involves the club’s billionaire owner (Youn Yuh-jung). “Season one’s the first level of the video game and this is level two,” Sung Jin told The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s a new set of hurdles, a new set of pitfalls. It’s a much more emotional season.” —Maggie Turner
