La Grazia is a stylish, soigné film, ruminative and enigmatic,” the critic Peter Bradshaw recently wrote in The Guardian. “Paolo Sorrentino has rediscovered his voice.” The implication is that Sorrentino lost his way with his last film, Parthenope, which was widely panned. This new film follows Mariano De Santis, a fictional Italian president played by Toni Servillo, as his term nears its end. He must decide on a euthanasia bill and on several potential pardons, while confronting his legacy and his family secrets. Between meetings with the pope and conversations with his daughters, Sorrentino’s protagonist reflects on time, regret, and pleasure. —Jeanne Malle
