Kátá Kabanová, by Leoš Janáček

May 20 – June 19, 2021
New Rd, Lewes BN8 5UU, UK

By the shores of the Volga we meet a gorgon, her son who is a mama’s boy, and the mama’s boy’s wife—a gentle soul driven to adultery with a milquetoast as put upon as she. It’s a sad story, but Janáček’s truthfulness and compassion, along with his ear for insinuating Slavic folk melody, make the score sing. From Glyndebourne’s music director Robin Ticciati, expect a reading that is incisive, lucid, painted in choice colors. Kateřina Knĕžíková takes the title role, opposite Katarina Dalayman as her domineering mother-in-law. Damiano Michieletto directs; expect neither Stanislavsky nor Pavlovian vandalism. —M.G.
