On May 28, 1934, Glyndebourne opened its doors with a production of Le Nozze di Figaro that has gone down in legend; record collectors cherish the performance to this day. This season’s new staging, by Mariame Clément, is the festival’s 10th and the first to be directed by a woman. In a promotional video, Clément declares that she could do Mozart’s masterpiece every year (in point of fact, this will be only her second crack at it). And while Glyndebourne, like just about any other opera company you could name, has in its day experimented with updates, Clément has decreed that that won’t happen this time—because the piece tells you so clearly what it is about, which isn’t so different from life as we know it today. Could the pendulum be swinging back? We’re guessing that the conductor Riccardo Minasi is over the moon, likewise the cast, led by Michael Nagl (Figaro), Johanna Wallroth (Susanna), Huw Montague Rendall (Count Almaviva), Louise Alder (Countess Almaviva), and Adèle Charvet (Cherubino). —Matthew Gurewitsch
