The German sculptor Julia Phillips often finds inspiration in music—the songs of Josephine Baker or Destiny’s Child. Her newest exhibition takes its title from a 2006 compilation of arias performed by the great soprano Jessye Norman; think Bizet, Purcell, Richard Strauss. Phillips turned to the album throughout the pandemic. “The range of works and genres covered on the compilation,” she says, “gave me inspiration to show works of different tones, medium, and work phases together.” This new solo exhibition—her first in Los Angeles—features the new works plus older sculptures, videos, drawings, and monoprints. —J.D.
