The London native Cynthia Erivo began her American career with the kind of bang not given to many. Her Broadway debut as Celie in the 2015 revival of The Color Purple brought her a Tony, an Emmy, and a Grammy, leaving her just an Oscar shy of EGOT status. Nominations for her Harriet Tubman and Elphaba haven’t put her over the top yet, but whaddya say we just give her time? This summer, Erivo is preparing to blow the nonexistent roof off the Hollywood Bowl in the title role of Jesus Christ Superstar. Mind you, this won’t be her first walk on the water of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sea of Galilee. In 2022, she put her spin on Mary Magdalene in an all-female studio album of the score, but could “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” begin to tap her charisma? Adam Lambert, lately a rock-star Emcee in the current Broadway revival of Cabaret, gets to showboat as Judas. (Next summer, maybe they can switch parts.) —Matthew Gurewitsch
