“I remember as a kid, I received a microscope for my birthday,” says the indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. “The first thing I examined through its lenses was a tiny scrap of torn newspaper. I was astounded. Instead of a single, solid sheet-like material, it was in fact a tangled mass of threadlike fibers, a chaotic jungle of microscopic pulp.” Jarmusch has never outgrown his fascination with newsprint and for years he’s used its imagery in collages. In the works now on view at James Fuentes, he’s placed scraps of newspaper imagery against brown paper in a five-by-seven-inch format, changing the heads or blacking out the faces, creating tiny dramas and mysteries. This exhibition presents 40 collages, made by Jarmusch between 2016 and today. —L.J.
