The Radiance: Beginnings of Korean Art Photography

68 Madeul-ro 13-gil, Dobong-gu, Seoul, South Korea

No history of Korean photography would be complete without Jung Haechang, the first Korean to champion the medium as a legitimate art form, and above all the first to capture spiritual truth, or jin, in photographs. In his 1929 Portrait of a Lady, for example, the subject—a woman dressed in traditional Korean hanbok—gazes beyond the frame, conveying quiet contemplation. A few years later, the photographer Lim Suk Je broke out of such romantic notions and captured his subjects with a ruthless, sharp-edged realism. In the 1950s and 60s, Lee Jyungrok would photograph shoemakers, fishermen, and street vendors across the island. This exhibition showcases the work of five pioneers of contemporary photography in Korea (Cho Hyundu and Park Youngsook are the other two). —Elena Clavarino
