Thaddeus Ropac is involved in a number of firsts this September. One of them is the launch of a new gallery in Milan, situated in the neoclassical Palazzo Belgioioso. To commence its opening, Ropac is pairing the art of Georg Baselitz and Lucio Fontana. Over recent years, according to the gallery, Baselitz’s work has increasingly been in dialogue with Fontana’s. “I began with drawings and paintings, in a way like digging, drilling, eavesdropping, ruminating, mining, as I thought about what lies behind or below,” wrote Baselitz in 2014. “And so, transmuted into lines and forms, I have transported myself from my world into another one—not so far as to no longer recognize the relatives.” If no one told us, these could be the words of Lucio Fontana as he considers his own “eavesdropping” into the world underneath the slashes in his canvases. “L’aurora viene” represents a timely and exciting dialogue between two greats. As part of the atmosphere of novelty, the show also aims to celebrate the rise of Milan as a global arts destination. —Jimmy Lux Fox
