The Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974, ended 48 years of dictatorship in Portugal. On the street, demonstrators handed carnations to soldiers. The crowd cheered and marched across the capital, and the regime so carefully put in place by António de Oliveira Salazar was overthrown then and there. To celebrate Portugal’s 50-year anniversary of democracy, striking contemporary jewelry—envisioned by the creators to honor women who fought for constitutional freedom—is on exhibition at the Royal Treasure Museum, in Calçada da Ajuda. The curator is Marta Costa Reis, whose own work centers around feminist themes. —Elena Clavarino
