A few words might come to mind when looking at photographs by Jacopo Benassi. Crude. Sexual. Raw. But what truly distinguishes the work of this 53-year-old photographer is its shallow depth of field, which paradoxically makes the subjects more sculptural, and also the use of flash, which doesn’t always illuminate the subject’s most attractive features. Benassi shoots friends, models, artists, and designers—but also people he meets and sleeps with. In this powerful show, some images are bound to shock. —Elena Clavarino
