Adapted from Helen Macdonald’s acclaimed 2014 memoir of the same name, H is for Hawk is about an academic who’s suddenly lost after the unexpected death of their father (Macdonald identifies as nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns). In grief, they take on the training of a young goshawk, one of the more difficult raptors in falconry’s pantheon, and become increasingly feral themself. Co-written by the director Philippa Lowthorpe and novelist Emma Donoghue (Room), the film stars Claire Foy (The Crown) as Macdonald and Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter) as their father, the award-winning British photographer Alisdair Macdonald. The film intertwines lush tableaus of the Cambridge countryside with Macdonald’s raw psychological journey. Foy, as always, is wonderful. —Paulina Prosnitz
