First published in 1901, Miles Franklin’s semi-autobiographical novel My Brilliant Career tells the story of Sybylla Melvyn, a headstrong young woman growing up in rural Australia. Sybylla dreams of becoming a writer, which is not compatible with the marriage and domestic life expected of her. The book was beautifully adapted into a 1979 film starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill. Now, more than four decades later, it’s getting another adaptation, this time as a six-part Netflix series. Philippa Northeast takes on the role of Sybylla, whose determination to forge a life of her own is tested when she meets the wealthy and charming Harry Beecham, played by Christopher Chung. —Carolina de Armas
