Xi’an born Guo Fengyi (1944–2010) became an artist at age 40, after debilitating arthritis forced her to retire from a chemical factory. To keep her pain at bay, Guo turned to qi gong meditation, in which she used breathing and coordinated body movements to begin a lengthy self-healing practice. According to Guo, qi gong taught her how body, mind, and spirit could move together. During her meditative sessions she began to see colors, shapes, and images, and recorded these visions in ink, completing 500 intricate drawings over the next decades of her life. Here, 30 epic visions from Guo’s inner world are on display. —E.C.
