The Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition and exhibition was launched in 1965, an initiative by Animals magazine that received just 361 entries in that first year. Two decades later, London’s Natural History Museum took the reins. The digital era had yet to dawn, which means judges sifted through jiffy bags brimming with slides and prints. Today the competition draws more than 59,000 entries from around the world, and the photographers are not just professionals but all ages. Now in its 60th year, the event’s exhibition of award-winning images, traveling from London, is opening in Jackson, Wyoming, for the first time. —Elena Clavarino
