Gillian Ayres

Sept 14 – Oct 30, 2021
6 Albemarle St, Mayfair, London W1S 4BY, United Kingdom

The artist Gillian Ayres, born in London in 1930, came to prominence in the 1950s. She looked across the pond at Jackson Pollock, whose action painting inspired her first Abstract Expressionist project—a mural—in 1957. She stayed abstract, and favored riotous color. “My paintings are about painting, about shape and color, not telling stories.” In her later years, Ayres painted in an eccentric studio where peacocks, cats, and dogs roamed. She died in 2018. Marlborough presents a selection of her works—joyous expressions of lyric energy. —E.C.
