The Austrian artist Martin Beck is focused on the spaces in which we live. “My interest in design,” he has said, “is less an interest in designed objects than a desire to understand the way the social realm is constructed through design.” Sometimes he explores this through mixed-media installations; other times he creates subtle architectural interventions. In this exhibition, Beck shifts his focus to environments, using sound, drawing, and video to explore how ambient design has been used to shape behavior and mood. —Elena Clavarino
