In 1963, the photographer John Deakin took a picture of four luminaries in London’s Soho: Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Michal Andrews, and Lucian Freud. They were dining at Wheeler’s, champagne chilling on the table. This exhibition takes that famous photograph as a point of departure, showing the work of all four artists and examining their awareness of one another’s practices. The exhibition runs in conjunction with the Tate’s Freud retrospective, which celebrates the centenary of his birth. —Elena Clavarino
