Project a Black Planet: The Art and Culture of Panafrica

Silk St, Barbican, London EC2Y 8DS, UK

Pan-Africanism—a broad political and philosophical movement advocating anti-colonial resistance and transnational solidarity among peoples of African descent—has shaped modern history as well as Black identity and destiny. And yet, until now, there has never been a major art exhibition devoted to the subject. The Barbican has set that right with over 250 works reaching from the 1920s to the present, and produced across Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, North America, and Western Europe. Artists in the show include Chris Ofili, Marlene Dumas, Claudette Johnson, El Anatsui, Lubaina Himid, Simone Leigh, William Kentridge, and Wifredo Lam. —Elena Clavarino
