“I don’t really know if my paintings are surreal or not,” said the artist Frida Kahlo, “but I know they represent the frankest version of myself.” Kahlo died in 1954, at the age of 47, and while she is one of the most well-documented artists of the 20th century, she remains mysterious, her enigmatic self-portraits the truest map of her inner life. “Frida: Beyond the Myth” presents approximately 60 paintings, photographs, prints, and drawings that delve into Kahlo’s defining moments. Images of her by those who knew her best reveal both sensuality and vulnerability. —Nyla Gilstrap
